Ithurial's Spear
Tritellia laxa[Formerly Brodiaea laxa]. Ithuriel's spear is the most abundant and widespread member of the Triteleia genus. Favoring grasslands or woodlands throughout the Bay Area, it is also known as grass nuts and blooms from April to May. Its stiff, foot-tall stems bear large umbels of open trumpet-shaped blossoms of great beauty. Many have compared them to the flowers of the garden agapanthus or lily-of-the-Nile. Flower size and color varies tremendously: some have relatively small deep blue flowers; others large sky-blue blossoms. A stunted but deep blue form is often seen along coastal bluffs. All forms feature six stamens attached at two different levels inside the flower tube.
