| Tidy tips can form big sweeps of color in
April to early May. The common name refers to the white tips
to the outer petals. Each flower head is two to three inches
across, on a stem a few inches to a foot or more tall. The leaves
are narrow and those near the base are slightly lobed. Several
similar Layia species occur in the Bay Area but are less common
here. L. chrysanthemoides has white tips but lacks the black
dot-like glands that are on the upper stems and bracts of L.
platyglossa. Most other species have rays that are all yellow. |
