Douglas Iris
Iris douglasianaSeveral kinds of iris occur in the Bay Area and can be hard to distinguish. Douglas iris is the commonest and several features help identify it. The leaves are broader than those of its relatives, being half to three quarters of an inch wide. Also, the leaves are shiny green on one side but more dull green on the other, and the leaf bases have some pink coloration. The flowering stems are usually one to two feet tall and often about as long as the leaves. There are several flowers per stem, and the color is very variable. It is common in open woods or grassy places, and flowers from February to May, or earlier near the coast.
